The experience I
gained while in Germany with the Transatlantic Outreach Program and sponsored
by the Goethe Institut was priceless. I was able to travel with a group of 16
educators from throughout the United States and Canada. The German government
sponsored us. That’s right—the German taxpayers paid for us to go to Germany (I
won’t mention my thoughts on that). With that said, a huge mantle of
responsibility was placed on us. We were to travel to Germany, learn of the
culture, education, government, and history, and bring it home to our students.
The goal of the foundation is for us to bring home our knowledge and present
modern Germany on a positive note, instead of dwelling on the past. I am so
grateful for the opportunity I had to travel to Germany.
Before I say anything else, can I just tell you how much I absolutely loved these little hotel rooms? They were tiny, but at the end of the day, it was all mine. It was my sanity. A place where I could come back and unwind my thoughts, read, sleep in peace, watch the BBC, and be alone. No internet, no people, just me and my thoughts (probably too many of them). I loved it.
